At the end of 2016 a few migrants from Cuba began arriving to Matamoros, Mexico to seek asylum in the U.S.A. The next two years more migrants arrived in Matamoros. By the beginning of 2019 a refugee camp with almost three thousand asylum seekers from more than twenty countries was created by the Rio Grande in Matamoros. We had been praying to go to the nations, and the nations came to us!
From the very beginning of the formation of the camp we were able to provide food, water, clothes, blankets, firewood, and spiritual support to thousands of asylum seekers waiting by the Rio Grande.
The refugee camp was finally closed on March of 2021, by the Mexican and U.S.A. governments. However, there were some asylum seekers in the camp with nowhere to go. We were asked to take them to our church, and we did. This is how our "Dulce Refugio Shelter" came into existence. We took in fifty-six asylum seekers who eventually crossed legally into the U.S.A. Nonetheless, due to cartels violence, political persecution, and extreme poverty, hundreds of asylum seekers kept arriving at our shelter, and eventually we had over four hundred of them in our shelter. Our goal was to provide a shelter to these women, babies, children, teenagers, and men fleeing persecution, death, and poverty. Please keep us in your prayers. Unfortunately, due to lack of funding, we had to close the shelter at the end of 2022. We bring every day 15,000 liters of water, and we bring food as donations come. As of June of 2023, there are over 4,000 asylum seekers at the refugee camp, and new asylum seekers arrive every day.
